Affiliate marketing is basically an understanding between the owner of a website and a merchant.  Affiliate marketing is a simple form of Internet marketing.    The website owner agrees to help the merchant sell its products and/or services and at the same time help the merchant advertise.  There are several methods in which advertising through affiliate marketing can take place.  Here are examples of more traditional ones:

4. Banner and Skyscraper ads

Those are common internet marketing strategies.  In addition to the said list, affiliate marketing strategy may also include strategies like posting reviews about the product of the merchant on his website. 

However, some website owners are also tempted to use questionable ways like spamming through Email.  But luckily, more and more affiliates understand how this can negatively affect their agreement so there are lesser cases of spamming through affiliate marketing nowadays.  There’s also the case of adware being used by online merchants.  They initially thought that it can help their cause.  It was their affiliates where the first one to notice the effect.  They were getting less share of the pie so they initiated a drive to stop using adwares. 

It’s important that both parties be vigilant with dealing with one another.  Each of them can affect the relationship negatively either by accident or on purpose.

Even with the issues, it’s easy to understand how this can benefit both the merchant and the website owner.  Aside from the initial agreement, they really don’t have to excess much effort in advertising.  A merchant can simply enter an agreement with several website owners and have them employ an affiliate marketing strategy that they can agree on.  If he wants more exposure through affiliate marketing, all he needs to do is place his ad in more websites.  For the website owner, he can just place the ad on his already existing website and stop there.  But most website owners would help advertise because they know that advertising through affiliate marketing can be lucrative and since they also have a share of the pie, they might as well make the most out of it.

It’s important for both parties to choose wisely.  Because of its potential, there are parties using crooked ways to take advantage of it.  On the other hand, there are affiliates not really into the agreement and are contented with what they have.  Such a set up can affect the other party.

But all in all, it’s a great strategy.  Exposure through Internet marketing is easily achievable and can even exceed your expectations if done correctly.  You just need to research on your affiliate to see if you can have a smooth relationship with him.  Affiliate marketing should be a long relationship in order for you to get its full effect so make sure that you’re willing to go for the long haul with your affiliate.
