An autoresponder is a complex program that does a very simple task – answer emails.  If sending emails is a daily routine for you, I’m sure you have encountered such program one way or another.  What do you get when you send an email to an incorrect email address or an email address that is full?  You get a message saying that your message is undeliverable along with the reason why.  That message is sent by an autoresponder via a mail transfer agent and is considered to be the first autoresponder.

Nowadays, one of the most popular uses of autoresponders is for email marketing.  Internet marketers rely on generating their mailing list and let’s face it, they have better things to do than answer emails one by one.  Although it’s not personally answered, using autoresponders make sure that your network receives an answer to their queries.

Another one of the uses of autoresponders is to work with an electronic mailing list software.  If someone wants to subscribe, unsubscribe or do anything else that is related to their membership to the list, using autoresponders will also make sure that the person will get a notification of the action that was done.

You can use it to send out promotional items that are helpful to anyone who is inquiring about your business.  You can set aside an email address that is reserved for a specific concern like inquiries.  If a prospective customer sends an email to that email address, they will automatically get a fixed response with all the helpful information that he needs.
2. It can be used to send information.  This is especially helpful if you are into E-coaching.  Your students will just send an email and then they will receive their course module.
3. You can use it for technical support or customer service concerns.  Most customers wouldn’t require immediate assistance via email. But autoresponders would reply with an email saying that you have received their email and they will receive a response in a specific number of hours or days.  This is also helpful if you won’t be online for a few days and you want to notify your email senders about this information.
